So here's a little situation that happened last night, and I am not quite sure if I should have played it differently or if I just got unlucky.  I am at the final table with 8 players left.  Blinds are 200/400, big blind is forced all in for 400 chips.  Second to act who is maybe 3rd in chips and big stack sitting 3 behind the dealer who has about double our stacks limp into the pot, and I have A5 off in the small blind so I follow.  (i am sitting on about 1800 in chips (about 4th stack).  I check blind indicating my good will to check it down unless I hit a monster and to have the best shot of knocking out short stack.  Flop comes down Ace diamonds, Jack diamonds, 7 clubs.  First guy also checks and the big stack throws out 800.  I push all in for 1400, smelling a diamond draw.  First guy thinks for a while and states "I can't believe I am laying this down"and folds,  Big stack calls.  I ask, "Are you on a draw?"  He states, "yeah, so?"  Well, he flips over the Q diamonds and 10 hearts (gut shot straight draw if you aren't following too closely here).  Running diamonds hit the board giving him the Q high flush, all-in player has the 10 high flush.  I keep running through this saying to myself I would never bet into a dry side pot without significantly improving my hand, and best case scenario I go all in first and the big stack may fold and I keep the other short stack in also.  Would love to hear how others might have handled this situation differently.

Check/fold any hand after the flop unless you flop straight or better. You will be button next hand and will still have 1400 chips. assuming you are about 4th in chips like you say, the other players will be forced to battle each other with mediocre holdings first. Wait until you are down to 5 players to start getting all your money in with any Ace or any pair.

Betting into the dry side pot was the best chance for this big-stack guy/girl to win the money. He had no hand and hoped that the flop missed the BB as well. It was an easy way to take down 2000 chips without any competition. If no one calls and he/she loses, then he only loses a BB. But if he wins he takes a commanding lead and can play aggressor to everyone remaining. But he got hand caught in cookie jar when you pushed, and now can't fold to your 600 chip re-raise. Fortune favors the bold and he gets lucky, but I don't completely disagree with his bet there. He's playing to win. Going from 8 players to 7 players doesn't change the dynamic of the table that much, nor does it increase his pay (it's not like each additional position wins bigger money... he's still over half a table away from making any money at all).

Griff- probably good advice, and normally I wouldn't think to call with just top pair in this situation. I just didn't believe him, and despite being right, I still lost. You would fold even if you thought you were ahead at the time?

If I had him covered, I may call... if it's for my tourney life... not sure.

I agree with griff on this one. I would want to live to see another day.

I hate to be a wimp in this game, but maybe in this situation it would have been the better play. It's weird cuz I had no problem laying down pocket jacks in the same game preflop when it was raised, I reraised, and he pushed back- I put him on a bigger pair. Now this other guy actually just had AK, so it was possibly the wrong lay down but it was early on and I had a bad feeling about it. You are probably right about waiting until a few more people drop to start making those plays.
